The Real Cost of Ignoring a Parking Ticket
What Happens When You Do Nothing
Many people receive a parking charge notice and wonder whether they can simply ignore it. For council PCNs, ignoring is never advisable because councils have statutory enforcement powers. For private parking charges, the consequences depend on the operator, but ignoring is increasingly risky.
Here is the full escalation timeline and the cost at each stage.
Private Parking Escalation
Stage 1: Parking Charge Notice. £60-£100
The initial charge. Usually offers a 14-day discounted rate of £60. This is the cheapest point to resolve the matter. But it is also the best time to check for defects and appeal.
Stage 2: Reminder Notice. £100
If unpaid after 28 days, the operator sends a reminder. The discounted rate is no longer available. You can still appeal at this stage.
Stage 3: Debt Recovery Letter. £100-£160
After 56-90 days, the operator may instruct a debt recovery company (DCB Legal, BW Legal). The amount may increase to include recovery fees. The same legal defects still apply.
Stage 4: Letter Before Claim. £160-£200
A formal pre-action letter threatening court proceedings. You have 14 days to respond. A professional response can stop the claim.
Stage 5: County Court Claim. £200-£350
The operator files a claim through the County Court. The amount now includes the charge, court fees, and interest. You must respond within 14 days or receive a default judgment.
Stage 6: CCJ. Credit record for 6 years
If you do not defend the court claim, a County Court Judgment is entered. This stays on your credit record for 6 years and affects your ability to get mortgages, loans, and credit cards.
Council PCN Escalation
Stage 1: Penalty Charge Notice. £65-£130
50% discount if paid within 14 days (£32.50-£65).
Stage 2: Notice to Owner. £65-£130
Sent if unpaid. You have 28 days to make formal representations.
Stage 3: Charge Certificate. £97.50-£195
50% surcharge added. The penalty increases by half.
Stage 4: Order for Recovery. £97.50-£195
Registered at the Traffic Enforcement Centre. Bailiff action becomes possible.
Stage 5: Bailiff Enforcement. £300-£25,000+
Bailiffs can clamp or remove your vehicle. Bailiff fees can add hundreds of pounds to the original charge.
The Lesson
A £60 parking charge can become an £25,000+ problem with a CCJ on your credit record. The cheapest and safest option is to check for defects early and appeal if grounds exist.
Our data shows:
- 70% of parking charges we assess have legal defects
- Most defects are identified in under 3 minutes
- A professional appeal letter costs from £9.99
- A court defence costs from £99.99
Compare that to £800 in bailiff fees or 6 years of damaged credit.
